Feeding Chinatown
Chinatown A-VOYCE School Year ‘23-’24
The Problem
Many of our workshops this year were focused on the issues of food security and food justice in the Chinatown area. At one of these workshops, we interviewed Chinatown residents and asked them what sort of food justice-related issues they deal with in their daily life. The main concern seemed to be access to fresh produce. They also noticed that although there were many resources available, many residents were unaware of them or didn’t understand how to access that information.
The Solution
This year’s A-VOYCE youth brainstormed ways to make information about food resources more readily available to Chinatown residents with the focus surrounding the question:
How might we increase Chinatown resident’s knowledge of food access?
Process
Youth interviewed Chinatown residents Aziza, Brittany, and Warren and asked about their current barriers to food access. After sharing their responses, the youth reflected on the resident’s needs and decided to create a resource guide with compiled information on local food discounts. The work was split up among committee groups, and with help from ACDC staff a new web page was developed!
Final project
After thorough research, the youth created a list guide with Chinatown businesses that provide fresh & affordable produce, information on local supermarket deals, and a calendar add-on that includes farmer’s market days. Both are available in English, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese and can be accessed here:
