Meet the Youth
Carro, Boston, 18, is the Co-Chair of the A-VOYCE youth council and is currently a senior at Boston Latin Academy. She is Chinese and Vietnamese and speaks Vietnamese along with English. Her favorite food is spring rolls. Unlike the stereotypes, she only likes Math when she gets it and doesn’t play any instruments. Her favorite subject is government because she likes politics. She aspires to major in Political Science/Government in college and ultimately become the U.S. President or an Asian American Studies Professor.
David, Boston, 18, is the Co-Chair of the A-VOYCE youth council and is currently a senior at Boston Latin Academy. He is Chinese and speaks Chinese along with English. Unlike the stereotypes, he doesn’t like math. His favorite subject is History because it feels as if the teacher is telling a story instead of just lecturing. He aspires to major in International Relations.
Phi, Boston, 18, is the Social Chair of the A-VOYCE youth council and is currently a senior at Boston Latin Academy. She was born in Saigon, Vietnam and speaks Vietnamese along with English. She enjoys going to Panera Bread to eat. Her favorite subject depends on the teachers. She refers to herself as "Princess Phi".
Philip, Quincy, 17, is the Radio Show Chair of the A-VOYCE youth council and is currently a senior at North Quincy High School. He is Chinese and speaks Cantonese, Madarin and Spanish along with English. His favorite food is steak. Unlike the stereotypes, he is very tall. His favorite subject is Math because it’s challenging and fun at times to find out the answers to problems hard to figure out. He aspires to major in Pre-med and ultimately become a doctor.
Diane, Quincy, 16, is the Marketing Chair of the A-VOYCE youth council and is currently a junior at North Quincy High School. She is Chinese and speaks Cantonese along with English. Her favorite food is tomato with scrambled eggs and rice. Unlike the stereotypes, she doesn’t have long straight black hair, isn’t extremely good at math, and is not going to be a doctor or lawyer. Her favorite subject is Biology because she likes to understand how living things function. She aspires to major in Biology at Tufts University.
So Jin, Newton, 18, is the Communications Chair of the A-VOYCE youth council and is currently a senior at Newton North High School. She was born in Seoul, South Korea, and speaks Korean along with English. She doesn’t have a favorite food because she likes everything. Unlike the stereotypes, she isn’t skinny and isn’t artistically talented.
Celinna, Boston, 15, is a senior member of A-VOYCE and is currently a sophomore at Boston Latin School. She is Chinese and speaks Cantonese along with English. Her favorite food is ice cream. Unlike the stereotypes, she isn’t fluent in Chinese. Her favorite subject is Math because it is constant. She aspires to major in Business at Yale or Brown University.
Kristian, Boston, 18, is the Civic-Engagement Chair of the A-VOYCE Executive Board and is currently a senior at Boston Latin Academy. She is Vietnamese and speaks Vietnamese and Japanese along with English. Her favorite food is lasagna, fettuccine alfredo, and steak and cheese sub. Unlike the stereotypes, she isn’t good at every subject. Her favorite subject is Government because she manages to learn something new everyday. She aspires to major in Public Policy and Urban Planning.
Franny, Boston, 19, is senior member of A-VOYCE and is currently a senior at Boston Latin Academy. She is Filipino and speaks Tagalog (Filipino) along with English. She likes every food. Unlike the stereotypes, she is not related to Jackie Chan. Her favorite subject is History because she can learn from the past in order to have a better future. She aspires to be the kind of woman every little girl can look up to and say “mommy I want to be just like her when I grow up.”
Jimmy, Boston, 17, is the Fundraising Chair of the A-VOYCE Executive Board and is currently a senior at Boston Latin School. He is Chinese and speaks Chinese along with English. His favorite subject is History, especially U.S. History. He is, as of now, undecided with what he wants to be in the future. He lives in Chinatown and has an older brother.
Richard, Boston, 17, is senior member of A-VOYCE and is currently a junior at Josiah Quincy Upper School. He is Chinese and speaks Cantonese and Mandarin along with English. Unlike the stereotypes, he speaks English and is smart. His favorite subject is English because he can free write. He aspires to attend a Liberal Arts School and work in an environment where individuality is promoted along with the benefit of short hours.
MeiHua, Boston, 16, is a senior member of A-VOYCE and is a sophomore at John D. Bryant School. She was born in Guangdong, China and speaks Chinese along with English. Of course, she likes Chinese food. Her favorite subjects are Chemistry and French because learning new things makes her happy! She aspires to major in Accounting at Babson College.
Mary, Boston, 18, is the Selection Committee Chair of A-VOYCE and is currently a senior at Boston Latin Academy. She is Chinese. Her favorite food is pizza. Her favorite subject is Math because she likes dealing with numbers. She aspires to major in Biology and ultimately become a physician.
Eric, Cambridge, 15, is a New Youth he is currently a sophomore at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. He speaks Mandarin as well as English. His favorite food is a steak and cheese sub with cole-slaw on it. Unlike the stereotypes, he isn't a ninja or a master of a style of kung fu. He aspires to study at any college or university double-majoring in a field of psychology and in a field of environmental science. Ultimately, Eric wants to become an ecologist, to save the world from it's horrible state that it's in and make the change seem as pleasant as possible.
Rachelle, Newton, 17, is a New Youth she is currently a junior at North Newton High School. She speaks Tagalog (Filipino) and English. Her favorite subjects in school are history and Latin, her worst are math, physics and chemistry. Rachelle wants to major in anthropology, because she wants to learn more about humankind and finds it fascinating. Her favorite foods are McDonald's french fries, chicken shish kabob, cod, lobsters and fruit crepes.
